Number Needed to Vaccinate (NNV)... Explained

After watching this short video learners should be able to:
1. Discuss the terms NNT and ARR in the context of drug therapeutics for specific patient populations
2. Evaluate the utility of applying the descriptive statistic NNV to approved and recommended vaccinations
3. Review the relative risk reduction (RRR) for approved and recommended vaccinations
4. Appreciate the importance of relative risk reduction (RRR) for vaccinations in patient-provider conversations.

What Is The Number Needed to Vaccinate (NNV)

A common question from individual clinicians and public health officials is how effective are recommended vaccines? Traditional descriptive statistics used for drug therapeutics, such as absolute risk reduction (ARR) and number needed to treat (NNT), are often ubiquitously applied to vaccinations. As we continue to review phase 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and real-world evidence (RWE) for approved vaccines, it is important to consider recommended vaccinations’ unique and powerful impact at an individual and population level. Most HCPs in a position to recommend and counsel patients on recommended vaccinations should consider the relative risk reduction (RRR) of a vaccine as it pertains to their patient. Check out this short explainer video on “NNV” and its utility for practicing clinicians.

PD Scope of Practice

On October 14th, 2022, to address the primary care crisis in British Columbia the BC ministry of health expanded the scope of pharmacist practice. As a result, pharmacists are much better positioned to address pneumococcal vaccination gaps in their patients. The following community practice scenarios leverage current scope of practice, clinical pneumococcal vaccination guidelines and BC pharmacare reimbursement policies as of Oct 2022.
